Abstract

The main purpose of the study is a codicological analysis of a work written at the beginning of the 18th century by the clerk of the Zaporozhian Army Samiilo Velychko. This study was carried out as part of a joint Russian-Ukrainian project to prepare an academic publication of the Chronicle’s text. The analysis was based on the original manuscript stored in the manuscript department of the Russian National Library (St. Petersburg). The study of pagination and foliation shows how the structure of the manuscript was established by the author. The opinion, popular in historiography, that the manuscript lost large portions of the original text, turned out to be erroneous. It is established that the creation the Chronicle lasted for several decades. At the end of the 17th century, while still working in the General Chancellery, S. Velychko conceived his work as an integral historical study, prepared fine, expensive paper for it, and put together a large collection of original documents and early copies dating back to the middle of the 17th century, including unique drawings and portraits. The Chronicle includes 259 documents, 3 diaries; S. Velichko used 24 literary works and refers to 7 works. The text of the work itself was written between 1715 and 1728, and the initial part of the manuscript was completed at the final stage. This is not a collection or compilation of documents, but an independent historical study, with the overarching concept, approach, and methodology.
