Abstract
The article highlights the background and circumstances that led to appearance of the Russian Orthodox community in Beijing and offers the analysis pertaining to the Decree of June 18, 1700 by Peter the Great on proliferation of Orthodoxy in China (seen by him as important for Russia''s rapprochement in China), to the role of the King-Reformer in the establishment of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission (REM) - Beijing Mission in China; the expanded outline of events connected with the REM first mission’s stay and activities in Beijing, and specified dating of a number of facts in its history. Particular emphasis is made on the role played by the Treaty of Kyakhta of 1728 in formalization of the REM status in Qing China.
