Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of socio-demographic processes in rural areas of the Russian Near North, primarily in the Kostroma region as representative of the region. Attention is focused on the analysis of mechanisms and estimates of the scale of depopulation processes, the components ofwhich are high mortality of the working-age population, migration of young and middle-aged people to cities, and imbalances in the age-sex structure with a predominance of the elderly population and a small proportion of children. The authors identify significant differences in the demographic indicators of municipalities in the Kostroma region and emphasize the importance of socio-demographic research at the primary (municipal and more local) level.
