Abstract
Interactions within the Eastern Bloc were of constant interest to the American intelligence community and to the CIA as its leading agent. In this connection, economic links between the USSR and its allies, namely the members of the Bloc, had distinct importance. The CIA closely watched the Soviet-Bulgarian bilateral economic cooperation taking into account Bulgaria’s place and role in the Soviet foreign policy both in general and in the context of the situation in the Balkan region particularly. As befitted other East European countries although to a less degree, Washington was awaiting possible reformist changes in Bulgaria.
