Abstract

The article attempts to explore the dynamics, features and «narrow places» of German-US relations in the first nine months after Joe Biden`s inauguration. The basic level was too low as a result of the US policy towards Germany during Donald Trump`s presidency. Historically FRG for a long time had been being a "student" and led by the Anglo-Saxon powers in the ideological sphere. But in the second half of 2010-s Germany was forced to become a protector of Western democratic values from the Anglo-Saxon powers because of Trumpism and Brexit.

The German tactics of "waiting out" the crisis state of relations with the USA has finished after Biden`s administration coming in power. From one side, there had been an exceptional mutual interest in the restoration of the relations. The key identifier for FRG was the speed and the scale of the US return to the principle of multilateralism in their foreign policy. From another side, there have been constraints to the dialogue. They are awareness of the fact that Trumpism in a broad sense has not disappeared and also the preservation of unpredictability in U.S. foreign policy under Biden (although in different forms than under Trump). The key examples were the final decision to withdraw all the troops from Afghanistan (2021, April) and the establishment of AUKUS (2021, September). The constraint for the dialogue with the USA was also German consistent striving to become full-fare world power. The article identifies three stages of German-US dialogue in 2021. They were rapid rise at the start, the expectations crisis in the situation of unfavorable solution to the "Afghan question" for Germany and then return to the new normality in bilateral relations. The scientific paper concludes about the importance of the USA in German foreign policy in 2021-2022.
