Abstract
The article considers the diffusion of "modern Western theory" in the community of St. Petersburg sociologists. Does the more conservative and domestic-oriented part of the community become more similar to post-Soviet institutions focused on the international market over time? Four models for the spread of Western theory are put forward: (a) convergence; (b) divergence; (C) reproducible isolation; and (d) modes. According to citation data from external intellectual sources the more isolationist side of St. Petersburg sociology eventually converges with the pole of more active development of the "new Western classics". This movement is mainly due to the younger generation of teachers. Possible explanations of the detected pattern are put forward.
