Abstract
The article presents the evolution of American and British sociology of law from the 1960s to the present. The main theoretical approaches to the analysis of legal institutions and the leading areas of empirical research are highlighted. The differences between the sociology of law and the study of the legal sphere in the framework of legal disciplines are emphasized. The article describes the features of the institutionalization of the sociology of law in the United States and great Britain. The article considers the impact of professionalization on the nature and features of the sociology of law in these countries. The importance of ideas for the development of the sociology of law is noted T. Parsons, J. Alexander, representatives of microsociological approaches.
