Abstract
The article reveals the peculiarities of the situation in the agricultural sphere of Russia in the 1920s and 1930s, and presents the proportions of socio-professional groups of the rural population of the Urals before and after collectivization. The processes of urbanization and migration of villagers are studied. Data from the all-Union population censuses of 1926 and 1939 and state archives are given. On the example of certain districts of the Ural region, the reasons for the increase in mortality and decrease in the birth rate in lean years are analyzed.
