Abstract
The article proposes the interpretation of the phoneme as a two-sided linguistic unit, including the signifier and the signified, the outer shell and content. The signifying phoneme is represented by a set of sounds that are in an additional distribution and realize the phoneme in all phonetic positions where it appears, this is a series of positionally alternating sounds; the signified phoneme is represented by the composition of its differential features, established on the basis of opposing the phoneme to other phonemes in the same phonetic positions. In the history of the language, phonetic changes (diachronic phonetic laws) can occur, which can relate to both the signifying phoneme and its signified, and also not touch either one or the other, but only lead to a redistribution of allophones according to positions.
