Abstract
The ancient Greek article, in combination with definitions, forms an "attributive group" that exhibits the properties of both an adjective and a noun phrase. The article describes the structure of attributive groups, their place in the noun phrase and in the sentence, their similarity with the results of ellipsis and substantiation. The role of the article in resolving syntactic ambiguity is also briefly discussed.
