- Abstract
The article traces the 35-year-long history of the North Expedition established at the Institute of Ethnography, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, from its origin in 1956 to its closure in the 1990s. The author discusses the part played by the Department of the North in the activities of the Expedition, as well as its concept, directions and methods of research, and theoretical and applied outcomes. Attention is paid to the role of the North Expedition in the development of Northern Studies in Soviet/ Russian scholarship.
