Abstract
The article discusses the phenomenon of Islamicized shamanism among the Turks of the Lower Povolzhie region. The author argues that the Lower Povolzhie region (Lower Volga River area) is specific in that a peculiar type of shamanism had formed there due to the circumstances of its development within the framework of Islam. The author defi nes this type as Islamicized shamanism. He traces the historical growth of shamanism and demonstrates that the shamanic cult came to be stripped of those features that contradicted Islamic norms by the end of the nineteenth century. He points to the fact that the very worldview of Turkic shamanism was gradually Islamicized in the region.
