- Abstract
- The article discusses the development of Orthodox Christianity among the Buryat in the historical period stretching from the seventeenth through the early twentieth century. The author analyzes the complications that Christianity faced in the process of competing with shamanism, as well as Buddhism which was growing stronger in the region; and touches on a variety of themes from the history of missionary movements to the shaping of religious syncretism. The article draws both on published and unpublished archival sources.
