Abstract
The author considers various opinions concerning two major categories of folk texts of the Algonquins of the Canadian Subarctic - tipatshimuna (historical legends, daily stories and eyewitnesses' tales) and aianukana (myths). He strives to find the place of the "first contact tales" among these categories and to elicit aboriginal interpretations of this event. Having studied five texts, written down in the XVII (Le Jeun) and XIX (Petitot) centuries, he shows that the "first contact tales" might have historic as well as mythical content; but both, depending on time of their fixation, reflect different stages of adaptation of the aborigines to the changing under European influence world.
