- Abstract
- The article discusses mourning rites of cleansing the house and lighting a sacred lantern among the Ismailis of Western Pamir, particularly the Bartang. The author attempts to describe and interpret the rites by tracing their origins and argues that they should be seen as a mix of pre-Islamic beliefs, such as Zoroastrianism, and later Islam. Survivals of those earlier components, he holds, have come to fit Islamic teaching so seamlessly that they are thought by the Western Pamir Ismailis to be originally Islamic.
