- Abstract
- The article discusses the so-called "Permian" trip of remarkable Finnish ethnographer Uuno Taavi Sirelius (1872-1929). Hoping to discover a wider body of data for the comparative study of economic life of Finno-Ugric peoples, Sirelius undertook that trip in 1907. During the course of the expedition, Sirelius was sending back to Helsinki extensive reports, which were published in the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper, and collected a unique body of field materials. Being an experienced photographer, Sirelius also became the owner of one of the richest photographic collections devoted to the culture of Finno-Ugric peoples. The authors discuss the destiny of scholarly materials left behind by the ethnographer and their importance for contemporary studies.
