- Abstract
- The author states that the issue of self-identification of Finns became the subject of debate in the early 1990s, when Finland was getting ready for joining the European Union. It was then that a range of publications on Finnish identity emerged. Thus, some of the Finnish authors who compared Finns with other European peoples tended to emphasize certain superiority of the latter and show the former in a negative light. Yet the initial stigmatization of the negative in Finns' identity was soon to give way to other venues of self-perception. Tracing this and other related problems is the focus of the article.
