Abstract
The author examines patterns of those relations between Bulgarians and other ethnic and social groups of the Ottoman Empire that were of a relatively established type (Serbians, Greeks, Turks, lews, and others). She argues that, in the period under consideration, the factor of religious identity of belonging played the most important and consequential part in the process of forming ethnic stereotypes in groups. Thus, the perception of peoples belonging to Orthodox denominations by Bulgarians differed radically from their perception of "non-Orthodox" peoples. Tracing the specificity of this and other factors, the author provides a view of the character of ethnic relations and stereotypes of Bulgarians in that historical period.
