- Abstract
- The article discusses ethnically mixed settlements in which the Chuvash appear as one of the contact groups. The author puts emphasis on tracing the characteristic patterns of ethnic interaction reflecting the extent to which various factors influence the development of the situation, mechanisms of mutual adaptation of ethnic groups, priority dimensions of their culture, etc. The article demonstrates that the prevailing pattern is presently the type of integration with indications of assimilation of the Chuvash by the quantitatively or culturally dominating neighbor ethnic group, despite the fact that, in a number of settlements, there have been historically different patterns of interaction: mutual isolation, dialogue, and acculturation.
