- Abstract
- The article discusses the part that religious factor plays in the shaping and maintenance of ethnic identity of the East Mari. In the author's view, traditional beliefs penetrated every aspect of their culture and defined the uniqueness of this group, as well as were instrumental in strengthening their ethnic identity, despite the considerable influence exerted by Christianity and Islam.
