- Abstract
- Drawing on the case of marriage rites among the East Mari, the author examines the influence that cultural borrowings exerted on the shaping of the marriage ceremony. She argues that the isolation from the main part of the ethnic milieu and the differing cultural surroundings were instrumental, on the one hand, in the consolidation of this ethnic group and the preservation of a number of archaic features in its traditional culture; on the other, in the modification of some elements and the transformation of rites.
