- Abstract
- S.A. Stephenson examines the social makeup of street groups, methods of creating own spaces, codes of honour, ways of constructing masculinity, and strategies of building relationships with other street groups or other strata of youth. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding the role of colonizing the street space by youngsters for understanding their lifeworlds. The colonizing of a street or a neighbourhood entails or results in the development of codes of honour and requires the learning of moral rules as well as rules of violence; it requires that social networks be built and collective rituals be mastered; it leads to the charting of group borders and the defining of who may or may not belong to it.
