- Abstract
- T.B. Shchepanskaia investigates economic strategies of livelihood in youth subcultures. She shows that there are particular consumer, and sometimes producer, forms that mediate the process of reproduction of these subcultures. Thus, the pattern of consumption may function as a distinction criterion identifying the subculture members or distinguishing them from the surrounding milieu. A youth subculture, members of which possess fewer resources, may display "symbols of poverty" as a distinction mark and build their livelihood strategies accordingly. Priorities may be placed on the maintenance of communicative ties within the subculture rather than the issue of comfort or luxury.
