- Abstract
- The article focuses on the tree worship tradition in Central Asia, which is viewed through the data of a case study conducted by the author in Khodzhi Baror, Fergana Valley. By analyzing and interpreting the data in conjunction with ethnographic and archaeological materials collected in other regions, the author attempts to uncover the underlying strata of beliefs that had come to form the ideological basis of the tree worship phenomenon. The author further argues that there are specific evidences, particularly those pointing to the tradition of associating trees with women, that make it possible to propose a hypothesis that Khodzhi Baror might have initially been a sacred place devoted to worshiping female deities.
