- Abstract
- The late-twentieth-century awakening of Islam among the Kazakh of Russia was followed by the construction of mosques and the emergence of imams educated in medreses of Russia, Kazakhstan, and other countires. Contemporary religious views of Russian Kazakhs, which are mostly within the framework of "traditional" Islam but also contain both pre-Islamic beliefs and traditions and Christian influences, are criticized by younger imams who seek to free the "people's" Islam from foreign influences. The authors discuss various aspects of contemporary religious views and perceptions of Russian Kazakhs.
