Abstract
The article deals with the role of Slavic characterology in the formation of the concept of specifically ethnic features of Russians/Great Russians in the Russian humanities of the nineteenth century. It is shown, how the Russian Slavistics perceived and adopted the view of Johann Gottfried Herder on the opposite directions of the Slavic and German «tribal elements», and how in the context ethnographic descriptions of the formatting the nation ethnic group of the Russian Empire in the second half of the century was built.
